Spellbound

good but very outdated...
Great book, but very confusing examples(code)I would highly recommend this book for someone that has some basic knowledge in UNIX and need fast intro (also great as the text book). This book will give you a good idea about everything in *NIX, but ones you done with it, you will want to buy another book.
P.S: I would give it a 5 stars if code would be written in less confusing manner.
Classic and still the best introduction UnixThe book covers a lot of territory. Starting with a good introduction to the Unix command line, it covers Unix tools like sed and awk, shell scripting, system programming with C. It even covers lex and yacc. Never mind, the books age - it's still the best computing book I've ever read and I will gladly recommend it for any one new to Unix.
The authors' writing style is excellent. There is a certain amount of dry humor that I grew to appreciate in subsequent readings. For example, about AWK's name, the commentary dryly says "naming the program after the authors' names shows a certain poverty of imagination"! Remember that Brian Kernighan (one of the book authors) is one of the creator's of AWK. Go and buy this book. NOW.

The Lost Mind
Surprising!
Amazing Book

A Futuristic Paranormal and Powerful Love Story. But having read the novel See You Later...I was astounded. God! He is even better than King is. Uhhhh...Booo!! I hear you scream...I will not argue much with you but I'm sure all of those who have read Pike's novel will agree with me that he is the Stephen King of YA Horror.
but this novel is not horror. It cannot be classified into any kind of genre. This is an out of the space genre. Although some spot of sci-fi, horror, fantasy and romance can be found in this book.
I don't want to spoil the suspense for you. But one thing, the beginning could be boring for you but getting in the middle...you will never want to put the book down...
In this book, Mark fell in love with a girl named Becky. But was heartbroken when he learned that she is going out with someone else. Then Mark meets a young couple: Vincent and Kara... Kara is strangely obsessed in getting Vincent and Becky together...she succeeded. But then terrible things begin to happen...that affects the entire future of our world...that only love can solve...oh hell tried to explain...but i can't
Oh my God! just read it! read it I beg you and you will love the author and will be hooked forever...I think this is the author's masterpiece so that he can say to you "See You Later" to read his other novels...
PIKE'S BEST EVER!
Confusing but the best!

Great book to read!
Thriller all the way through!!!!!!!!
One of Christopher Pike's Best

A mysterious thriller that pulls you into its twisted plot.
Edggie, Capturing, and Mysterious
Absolutely fantabulousEven though it's one of Pike's earliest works, I think that it is one of his best. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever read Pike or even if you haven't, try this one and see if you don't like it. I think I like this one better than some of his more recent works because it is different from his recent ones. His recent works have more of the supernatural/sci-fi element, and while that is all good and well, I enjoy more grounded works every once in a while, which Weekend is.

A Brick for Your ShelfWith that said, reading this novel has been one of the most tedious and painful experiences I ever subjected myself to. I don't really care about any of the characters (how can you care for someone without qualities??), there is no plot, the characterization seems cliched, the ideas seem trite.
This novel probably does give a good indiciation of how the Austro-Hungarian Empire must have felt in relationship to Europe right before World War I--someone just needed to shoot this cumbersome beast and put it out of its misery; the novel is the same way--compared to Kafka, Joyce, Proust, Svevo, even Faulkner, this novel doesn't hold much interest.
I do feel that students of literature should at least read the first section, "A Sort of Introduction" to get a feel for what Musil is doing. But once one gets the point of the novel of ideas, one doesn't need to finish the rest of the novel, unless one is really into it (hey, enough readers seem to like it, maybe you will be one of them.)
Finally, this is the type of book that looks good on a shelf, and the type of book that people read during graduate school and then never read again. It is a very important book, but knowing what Musil accomplished may be more of a prize than reading the entire novel. If anything you can wow your literary friends by mentioning a great Austrian writer with a name that sounds like cereal--don't worry most won't ask you anything more about the book.
Very interesting thoughts, maybe a little too rich in detail
Essential ReadingThere are two opposing tendencies in the novel: On the one hand, Musil offers a highly entertaining satirical portrait of Austria-Hungary right before the First World War. His detached hero Ulrich meets all kinds of bizarre people, who happen to be members of the ruling class of the country. Like a vivisecteur, Ulrich analyzes the philosophies and ideologies of his time. On the other hand, he dreams of a kind of new mysticism, an emotional purity that is opposed to the dross surrounding him; together with his sister he embarks on quest for "the other state of being". Musil never finished the novel, he died before he could achieve a conclusion; which may have been impossible anyway.
This gigantic torso of a novel is arguably the greatest novel of the century. I have not yet come across anything that could rival it. Musil's prose is so precise that after reading a few pages you feel that your mind has been refreshed and cleared. This is not a novel to be read in a few days, but even if you never manage to finish it, you will always come back to it.

As is usual for C. Pike, sounds awful but is incredible
David's Review
An incredibly intelligent novel

NOT PIKE'S PEAK...The book gets off to a promising start, and the premise of the book is pretty straight forward. An FBI agent, David Connor, reeling from a bust gone bad, is asked to go undercover as a magazine reporter and investigate a channeling group called the Listeners, who channel an entity called the "Big Mind" which is a sort of collective consciousness, coupled with ancestral memory.
Central to the Listeners existence is a set of identical twins, Lucy and Vera Temple, beautiful, young women who possess great psychic ability. When David meets them, there develops a mutual attraction between David and Lucy, and they ultimately fall in love. Little do they know that a great evil is waiting for them. Something primeval is lurking below the conscious surface, ready to spring forth and rock their world. When it does so, David is called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice to save mankind. What happens at the end, however, is sure to surprise the reader.
One caveat is that this book is not suitable for those in the nine to twelve age group, as Amazon.com suggests, given the violence, sexually explicit references, and four letter words interspersed throughout the book. It seems more suitable for a young adult audience.
It was one of the best books that I have ever read
A Truely Wonderful Book!I would recomend this book for people who love a little bit of romance, mystery, and even creative history. What I mean by history is that the author will leave you wondering how the world was even brought about. And if you are a Pike fan...this is a must read!
While it is hard to explain as to why this book was so wonderful there is one line that leaves me captivated-The purpose of life is unknown. It is a mystery, and you know mysteries can be lived but never explained. Do you understand?-
So overall this book was a great read!
I think her roomate deserves what happeneds at the end. Something that makes Mallory really happy. But that's all I'm saying. ;-)
